Trade Test and ARPL

Have industry experience but no formal trade qualification?

Phemphetse Training Academy supports experienced and semi-skilled candidates through the Artisan Recognition of Prior Learning process, helping them work towards formal trade recognition.

ARPL is designed for candidates who have gained relevant workplace experience but may not have completed a formal qualification pathway.

Candidates should generally:

    • Be older than 19 years
    • Have at least three years of relevant workplace experience in the trade they want to complete
    • Provide an original service letter
    • Provide a certified copy of their ID
    • Provide certified certificates where applicable
    • Submit an up-to-date CV
    • The current prospectus outlines specific practical training across ARC, gas, TIG and CO2 welding as well as welding across different materials and positions.


The service letter should provide sufficient information to verify the candidate’s workplace experience, including employment dates, duties performed, employer details and supervisor information.

The ARPL and trade test process

Depending on the candidate’s experience and assessment outcome, the process may include:

    • Pre-assessment or evaluation
    • Gap training
    • Tool kit completion
    • Serial number processing
    • Trade test preparation
    • Trade testing
